Well spring in almost here again!! And man Have I been waiting for this for a while. I never did get out of the gym or dojang much to do other sports this winter, but now with Spring & Summer ahead no sesse on dwelling on the things I didn't do.
Since Spring is quickly approaching and the weekend weatehr looking great, I am going to get my bike out of storage and tune it up for a quick ride around town. Plus the srping cleaning and landscaping begin soon, since I just moved into a new place, there is lots to do in that dept.
And now that the good weather has been arrving the gym is buzzing with anticipation to when we can throw the big door open and just work out without the heater on. This weekend begins the parking lot training series for a weeks. Which essentially means we work out in the parking lot doing sprints, box jumps, body weight excercises, and cones. Not to mention the new gym TIRE coming this year and half court Basketball area.
Soon also begins the new season of biking to work, I am very much looking forawrd to getting out and getting in shape and training for that Triathlon. Also It keeps me in better Tae Kwon-Do condition.

UPDATE # WINTER TRAINING Part. 2
Well as posted in Part 1, there are a multitude of different ways you can get out and still train during the winter. Being that I wanted to attempt 3 of these (snowboarding, Ice Climbing, Hockey).
Unfortunately I have yet to attempt any of these. It is mostly due to being very busy at the moment, but also with the horrible winter we have been having. As far as Hockey and skating, the outdoor rinks have suffered from the changing temperatures that they were only open a short time, and the arena was always packed on both ices when it could be used. So out went ice hockey, however we do play street hockey every now and then during the winter which has been great fun. As far as Ice climbing goes, I was not able to find anywhere close to try it, since the ice in the Elora Gorge has not been good, so I was told. And Snowboarding is just time, but I do plan on going this winter, we are taking a trip in a few weeks.
So to make up for the lack of outdoor stuff I haven't been doing, I bought a treadmill and have been using it daily. This has been great and hard at the same time. But since I am training for a Triathlon this Summer, I think this is the best thing I could do in the winter. Also I have been going to Tae Kwon-Do Classes at least 3 times a week, and going to the gym at least 3 times / week as well.

Dec. 4th, 2009: Winter Training Begins, Part: 1
Well Last week we had our first snowfall here in Fergus, and this morning there is a little bit on the ground as well. Even though the snow quickly melted, it is a reminder that winter is almost here to stay.
Which brings up issues as too winter training. Personally I don't like having to train indoors all the time or constantly be in the gym. But with it being darker earlier and getting cold, like really cold in Fergus. Most people don't want to be training outdoors, me included!
So this winter I strive to figure out the best possible way to stay in shape without having to be the gym all of the time. Now I know there are plenty of outdoor winter activities that are very good for staying fit, cross country skiing for example. But unfortunately that is just not my thing, and would not enjoy it. So the key to winter training is finding something fun to do to stay in shape. Myself, I am going to try snowboarding, hockey and ice climbing this year, and moving my Ski Doo around this winter won't hurt either. As well as continue to spend at least an hour or so at the gym a day. I think that will work out nicely.
I choose those 3 Sports because A) I am horrible at them B)Not much else to do in Winter but these 2 things and C) Because I think cross training in these 3 winter sports will be the most beneficial to my Martial Arts training.
Multi-Sport Cross Training can provide an athlete with a whole new way to train, For Example. By playing Hockey, your hand and eye co ordination improves, as well as cardio endurance, fast twitch muscles reflexes, as developing incrediable foot speed and ankle strengh provided by the skating portion, and the hitting toughens you up too! Now I don't know about you, but most of those things seem key to any martial arts training program. Snowboarding However provides a different set of benefits, such as improved independant lower body control, better balance, a higher jumping, reflexes and improved core muscle development. And not to mention falling only helps to toughen you up or practice going limp for falling technique!
During the summer the possibilities are endless as far as multi-sport cross training goes, soccer, swimming, volleyball, cycling, mountain biking, rock climbing. All of these can improve your Martial Arts Abilities. But the winter it is much harder, so try not to hibernate and get out and find something new you like, or try a different version of something you already like, Indoor soccer, or intermural Dodge-Ball.
So stay tuned during the winter for progress reports on my learning each new sport and then seeing how those winter activities improve my Martial Art Skills
SO I think the key to keeping you winter traing program fun and not boring is too more or less get outdoors and have fun with some physical activites that will leave you fit and with fond memories. But even though you are doing new things, never neglect your M.A. Basics, and by that remember to still continuously practice your patterns, your punching, your kicking, whatever the basics of you art are, becasue your basics can never be too good. I have never heard any teacher say, ok your punch is perfect, you don't need to practice it ever again, yet this is how some students view their training, learn it, test it, forget it. These peole are practioners of the Martial Arts, they are NOT Martial Artisits.

November 16th, 2009
Tournament Went well, I received 3rd place in patterns, and 2nd in Self Defence.
I did enter the Sword and High Kick competiton but did not win either, but I did better than I thought I would, so was very happy with that. I am kinda disappointed with my pattern performance but that is usually how I feel, I really must spend more time practicing and perfecting them. Also I want to win High Kick, so I need to start training and doing that now for next year! As far as Sword goes, I need a lot of work!
Returned to the gym yesterday after a month long hiatus, man was it a bit weird trying to get back int othe flow of things again. We did a FITDECK workout yesterday that consisted of 15 Bodyweight Cards, 10 Navy Seal Cards & 10 Combat Sport cards. And what a workout, although my knees were quite sore, we did a lot of upper body work(Navy Seal cards are a lot of push ups and pullups). My arms/chest are a bit sore today but in a good way. Tongiht we have a TKD class and I might try to fit in a small bit of gym time today too, just for some liught weight work. Tomorrow is back to the gym and starting back to reg. scheduled workouts and training!

One Day till Tournament
Tournament is tomorrow ! So far my Candle Practice has not turned out very well. However it is not totally my fault, the wood sword I am using is larger and heaveir than the one I practiced with, making it harder to snap back, so I am going to the main school to attempt to borrow/buy one, so that I have it for practicing with. Other than that my practice and prep is going quite well, I have been practicing my pattern for a while, and need one clarification regarding type of block from Master Oh, other than that it should be good enough to win 1st, and if not 2nd. Running Jumping High is going well, Although I belive my opponent Ryan to be capable of Kicking Higher than me (cause he is a super lanky tall jumping skeletal phenom) I am confident he can not break the board at a level any higher than I can on a good day, I hope tomorrow is a good day. I am going to Black Belt Class tonight and will practice it there after a good stretch. Lastly my self Defence are going as predicted: WELL. I have to come up with one more, maybe 2 over today/tonight and I am good. Depending on My competition tomorrow, I should place 1st. Even though I really wanted to compete in the free form competition I am no where near ready for that challenge, nor is my partner Tyler, whom would probably end up slightly hurt upon the finish of that, So I will wait one more year and get my body into better reaction shape before I enter that competition. Also m yMartial Supply Company has made a recent deal to be an Official Distributer in Canada for FITDECK (www.fitdeck.com), which is an awesome fitness playing card deck/workout system
and with 8 Full Sized Deck (56 cards) & 25 Booster Decks (15-26 cards) It is sure to give you a great wokrout that you never get bored of, just mix and match any of the decks of cards together and draw 10-15 and perfor mteh excercises, or try to get through the whole deck, or challenge a friend! Any way you use them, you are sure to get a great workout!

Nov. 9th, 2009: 5 Days till Tournament
Well tournament is 5 days away and I have found out there is no sparring divison for me(black betl division), so I do not have to train for that. Which is probably a good thing, due to so little time spent preparing for that part of the competition. This tournament's focus for Black Belts is percision! We have a patterns division which is standard, I am going to do Gwang-Gae Hyung, as that is my best pattern at this level. After Patterns we have our free five self defence which is something that I generally excel at, so I am going to just go over the techniques I have and perfect them, I hope my defence partner Tyler doesn't mind the repeated tuning of these!!!
After that there are 3 special divisions that we can enter, although I think I am going to only enter 2 of them. The 3 events are Running Jumping High Kick Breaking Event, the 3 Candle Sword Snuff & the Free Form self defence event. I am going to enter the Sword and Kick, not sure about Self Defence yet!
This past Friday I received all of the details of the tournament and began to practice my sword, I was able to put out the candle a few times! After that we worked on a bunch of body excercises from the Golgulsa Temple in Korea, mostly juts slow moving in odd positions to work the body, like balancintg and turn ing with your leg straight out to the side, etc. It was very challenging and fun too, man were my legs sore afterwards!
After a Great Friday night class, the weekend was spent finishing up the move into my new house and having the house warming party on Sat., which is exactly the reason I did not train on Sunday.
